The GSC Rho Mu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Congratulates Juan Llanes!

Juan Llanes, a Gainesville State College student, was selected as one of 20 community college students who were named to USA Today's 2009 All-USA Community College Academic First Team. The annual recognition program, administered by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, honors outstanding two-year college students. Llanes is the first Gainesville State student to receive the honor. Juan, a native of Cuba, and the 19 others were chosen from among more than 1,400 nominees who were honored for "outstanding intellectual achievement and leadership."

Each student received a $2,500 cash award and medallion at Phi Theta Kappa's Presidents Breakfast held during the Annual Convention of the American Association of Community Colleges Convention (AACC) in April of 2009, in Phoenix, Arizona. Phi Theta Kappa awarded additional scholarships through the New Century Scholars Program, sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and the Coca Cola Foundation. Juan was also selected as Georgia’s New Century Scholar and received an additional $2000 award. In May 2009, Juan graduated from GSC with a 4.0 GPA and plans to continue his education at Georgia Tech and then, perhaps, M.I.T., the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
