Lab Services
- Students are encouraged to use the resources available in the library to do more than their lab work. Tutors are available on a one-on-one or group basis to answer any questions and will be happy to provide students with materials such as handouts, verb and grammar books, grammar activities and dictionaries. Tutors are also available for conversation and pronunciation practice and for help with studying, by quizzing or setting up a group-study time. If students are struggling with class topics, tutoring is strongly advised. Tutoring hours will be posted on the bulletin board in the library.
- Location of tutors: If you do not see a tutor at the Foreign Language Help Desk by the Log-In computer, ask at the front desk.
- All students must bring in a lab sheet from their instructor which lists the activities they are required to complete in the lab. These activities need to be signed and stamped by a tutor. The only activities that do not need to be signed and stamped are online activities, which can be signed by front-desk staff. Students must print off this work or have someone look at their screen in order to receive a signature.
Log-In computer: Don’t forget to log in and out!
- The Log-In computer is located towards the back of the library.
- Students must:
- log in when they are working in the library on anything related to their language class;
- log a minimum of one hour per week; and
- log in for Conversation Café.
To log in: Press 1, enter your 924 number and full name. Type “Y” if the information displayed is correct, and then enter the number that corresponds to your class time in military time. Enter the number that corresponds to your class. You are now logged in.
To log out: Press 2, enter your 924 number and full name. Type “Y” if the information displayed is correct, and type in the comment box your instructor’s last name and a brief description of what you did during your time in the lab (e.g. “worked with tutor,” “group study,” “Conversation Café,” “Quia,” etc.).
- It is strongly recommended that each student record his/her lab hours manually on a Lab Hours Sheet, to be found in a folder by the Log-In computer. This sheet serves as a back-up record of the student’s lab hours.
- Instructors will receive a lab report of each student’s logged lab hours at the end of the term.
Lab Materials
- Audio activities for Débuts, Aventuras, Enfoques, and ¡Hola Amigos! Can be accessed on the lab computers by going to: Start Menu à GSC Menu à Languages. Select the appropriate language and activity. Students must bring their own headphones. Headphones can be purchased at the Bookstore for $3-$4.
- Multimedia and video CD-ROMs can be checked out on reserve at the front desk with a student ID or driver’s license.
- All materials come packaged with the textbooks, and thus can also be used at home.
- In the case of Aventuras, Quia can be accessed from any computer with internet access by going to the URL http://books.quia.com.
- Sentence Scramble activities are available to Spanish students. They are on reserve and may be checked out at the front desk. These are scrambled responses to the departmental questions, and are excellent for grammar practice as well as for preparing for the challenging sentence scramble portion of exams.
- Regarding Enfoques, lab manuals must be checked before a lab tutor or assistant will sign and stamp or give students the tape script. If the student is having trouble, he or she must listen to the audio twice before using the tape script. Students may access the answer key once they have used the tape script.
